Lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) groups around the world marked International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO) last 17 May 2008. On this day, LGBT groups called for concerted action towards the shaping of societies that respect LGBT persons, particularly through changes in laws. As reported by TARSHI (Talking about Reproductive and Sexual Health Issues),a group based in Delhi, India, 86 member states of the United Nations still criminalise consensual same-sex sexual acts among adults.

TARSHI published a paper studying how laws in Bangladesh, Bhutan, Brunei, India, Malaysia, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Singapore, and Sri Lanka still criminalises consensual same-sex activities. The paper calls on the governments of these countries to decriminalise homsexcuality and adhere to the Yogyakarta Principles that recognise the full human rights of all LGBT persons. The full paper can be downloaded from the The South and Southeast Asia Resource Centre on Sexuality website at http://www.asiasrc.org

This issue of we! highlights the organised efforts of LGBT groups in Asia with the following articles from the 3rd ILGA Asia conference held last January 22 in Chiangmai, Thailand. The complete proceedings of this conference is available at http://www.isiswomen.org/
